1. KNOWLEDGE BASE EXPANDED

In the last few months the Knowledge Base (http://www.eng-software.com/kb) has become the center of all PIPE-FLO technical support. From the Knowledge Base you can now find the most current version of all our software, gain access to the pipe and fluid engineering data tables, learn about our Software Testing & Verification plan, as well as download and print the Method of Solution used by each program.

Each PIPE-FLO program has a link to the Knowledge Base from the “Help / Internet Tech Support” menu item. There are direct links to the most popular articles; in addition, you can search the entire knowledge base to find articles on a specific topic or key word.

2. PIPE-FLO TRAINING IN ORLANDO FLORIDA
The next FLO-MASTER training class is scheduled for February 25th and 26th in Orlando Florida. During this two-day hands-on seminar, you’ll see how to get the most out of your PIPE-FLO program.
You’ll discover:
  • The “Three Secrets” of quickly building a piping system

  • How to create your own pipe specifications and design files that can be used by everyone at your company

  • How to build a piping system, select the equipment, and see how the system operates under different operating conditions

February in Orlando is an excellent time to learn about PIPE-FLO, take a break from the winter weather, and take advantage of the low cost airfare. Join us in sunny Orlando FL on February 25 and 26.
Last years Florida class filled quickly so reserve your space today by calling toll free

3. LINKING TO CAD DRAWINGS

The piping schematic drawing (flow diagram or P&ID) serves as the starting point for all the design documents in a piping system. For example, a piping schematic typically contains the unique identifier for every pipeline and piece of equipment in the system.

Using the new FLO-Link feature of PIPE-FLO 7.1, you can assign links to CAD drawings.  For example, you can create a note on the FLO-Sheet listing the general arrangement drawing that shows the physical layout of the system on the schematic. If the drawing is in electronic form a FLO-Link can be created to automatically open the referenced CAD drawing.
There are only two requirements for viewing a drawing under PIPE-FLO, one is for the user to have access to the file, and the second is to have the drawing viewer program installed on the computer.  Since most CAD suppliers provide free viewer programs for their drawing files, anyone within your organization can view the general arrangement drawing from within PIPE-FLO.
Remember, with PIPE-FLO 7.1 you can create Piping System Viewer files that also contain the FLO-Links.

4. EVALUATING THE PUMP AND CONTROL VALVE LISTS

Once a list of pump or control valves has been selected by PIPE-FLO you need to evaluate which item on the list best meets your system needs.

You may want to sort a pump list by efficiency. Simply click the mouse pointer on the efficiency column on the pump list and PIPE-FLO sorts the list by decreasing pump efficiency.
Both the pump and control valve selection lists can be sorted by any column in the list. Simply click on the column heading you want the list sorted by and PIPE-FLO will sort the list.
There will be a point on the list in which you will want to delete the items that don’t meet your minimum requirements. For example, suppose there is only 15 ft of Net Positive Suction Head available (NPSHa) at your pump suction.
You can sort the pump list on NPSHa, placing the pump with the lowest NPSHr at the top of the list. Then select the first pump on the list with the NPSHr greater than 15, then drag the mouse to the end of the list to highlight all the pumps with NPSHr greater than 15 ft. You can delete the group of pumps with high NPSH requirements by clicking the delete button.
The list sorting and multiple item delete features of PIPE-FLO greatly streamline the equipment evaluation process.

5.  WEB BASED TRAINING FOR JANUARY

This month’s TechNet Plus Web based training is entitled “Using Pipe Specifications and Saving Design Files”. Design files act as Templates that streamline the creation of a new PIPE-FLO project. Each pipeline in a PIPE-FLO project is based on a pipe specification.  By creating your own design files you can streamline the design process and maintain design control.

TechNet Plus Web Seminars are 60 minutes in length and deal with a specific PIPE-FLO feature. Seminars are held on the second and fourth Thursday of the month (January 9 and January 23, 2003) at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time. All you need is access to the Internet and a phone.
There is space for only 15 attendees in a Web seminar, and the slots are assigned on a first come first serve basis. For more information on this month’s Web Seminar or to reserve a spot please contact Demry McCoy at sales@eng-software.com.

6. CHECK ON PROGRAM UPDATES

Did you know maintenance updates are available free of charge to all PIPE-FLO customers? Maintenance upgrades are issued between major program upgrades and they correct minor problems within the program. The most up-to-date list of maintenance upgrades can be found by searching the Knowledge Base for “Current Software Versions”.

You can also check to see if you have the most current maintenance version directly in PIPE-FLO by selecting the “Help / Check for updates” menu item. You are directed to a Web page on the Engineered Software where you can download the most current maintenance version of the program.
I would encourage all PIPE-FLO Professional 7.1 users to check to insure they have the most recent program upgrade. We recently released PIPE-FLO Professional 7.1a to correct a minor problem with saving and retrieving deign files.
