1. CUSTOMIZING DATA TABLES
PIPE-FLO uses engineering data tables to look up the pipe, valves & fitting, and fluid property data for use in the pressure drop calculations. Using the Table Manager program (supplied with PIPE-FLO), you can customize any of the engineering data tables. To learn more about how PIPE-FLO uses these tables go to the Knowledge Base http://www.eng-software.com/kb, and search on “Engineering Data Table Overview”.
Using the supplied Table Manager program, you can:
  • Install the pipe, valve & fitting, and fluid data tables you typically use in your projects.

  • Modify the pipe and fitting tables to meet your company’s standards, by changing the pipe roughness, or eliminating pipe diameters your company does not use.

  • Create pipe, valve, and fluid tables for manufacturers of specialty pipe and valves.

  • Download pipe and valve tables from the Engineered Software Website.

The Table Manager program is easy to use, and comes with online help to guide you through the entire process. To start the program from within PIPE-FLO, selects the Tools / Data Tables menu item.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
A good understanding of proper pump application, selection, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance are vital to the success of your company. Now you can learn everything you need to know about pumps at a three-day course April 29 – May 1, 2003 in Long Beach, CA. For more information or to register, contact Volk & Associates at 800-733-8655 or by email at mvolk@aol.com.

2. MODELING AUTOMATIC FLOW CONTROL VALVES
Automatic Flow Control Valves are used in cooling system where the system needs to be balanced (HVAC chilled water, service water, etc.)  Unlike manual balancing valves, Automatic Flow Control Valves are set at the factory to fix the flow rate through the valve a wide range of differential pressures.
A customer recently asked how to model an Automatic Flow Control Valve (AFCV) using PIPE-FLO. Knowledge Base article “1345 Modeling Automatic Flow Control Valves” describes how an AFCV works, perform the calculation needed for proper valve selection, along with a list of AFCV manufacturers. The article also has example files so you can follow along. A PSV file is provided for those of you that don’t have PIPE-FLO 7.1. (http://www.eng-software.com/kb/item.asp?ID=1345).

3. SENDING INFORMATION TO VENDORS
In the previous article, we describe how PIPE-FLO performs the calculations needed to select Automatic Flow Control Valves. PIPE-FLO also performs sizing calculations for pump and control valves. Using the Piping System View feature of PIPE-FLO 7.1 you now can e-mail equipment suppliers a copy of your system file so he or she can use the results to select the best equipment for your system.
Using PIPE-FLO’s PSV file, extensive notes, and FLO-Link features, you can provide pump, valve, and control valve suppliers with all the information needed to specify the equipment. The PSV file provides them with an accurate system model complete with all the sizing calculations. By entering notes for each item, you can provide detailed instructions to the vendor down to the equipment level. By attaching hypertext FLO-Links to your equipment specification documents, the vendor can view and print them from within the PIPE-FLO Viewer program. Since the PIPE-FLO Viewer can be downloaded free of charge, anyone can gain a clear picture of how your system operates.

4. PIPE-FLO WEB PRESENTATIONS
Every Tuesday we provide a Web based presentation on how PIPE-FLO provides you with a clear picture of your piping system. During this free 45-minute Web presentation, you will see how PIPE-FLO 7.1 can save you time and money on your next piping project. You’ll see how to create hypertext links to electronic documents; e-mail PSV files and printed reports to others; and select and evaluate pumps and control valves from manufacturers electronic catalogs.

The PIPE-FLO Web Presentation is not a “canned” demo, it’s a way to see the program in operation and ask questions to one of our presenters.  To register for a Web Presentation direct your browser to http://www.eng-software.com/webdemo/default.htm and fill out the registration form. You’ll receive instructions on how to log in and see the latest version of PIPE-FLO in operation.

5. SHARING RESULTS

PIPE-FLO 7.1 incorporates many new features so your can share your piping project using e-mail. It’s built into the program, and works seamlessly with Outlook, Lotus Notes, or any e-mail program supported by Windows.

You can e-mail the PIPE-FLO project you are working on to another PIPE-FLO user. We often have customers on a support calls e-mail the system they are working to our technical support group. Within minutes, we are both looking at the same project.
Need to share your system model with someone who doesn’t have PIPE-FLO?  Just e-mail them a Piping System View (PSV) file; the recipient can open your piping model and view your results using the PIPE-FLO Viewer program. A note attached to your e-mail has a link to the Engineered Software Website where they can download the free PIPE-FLO Viewer program.
If you want to provide your customers with a formatted report, you can e-mail any PIPE-FLO report as a Portable Document Format (PDF) attachment. When they receive the document, they can view and print it out with the Adobe Acrobat reader.
In PIPE-FLO 7.1, we designed a seamless integration of a powerful piping simulation program with the ability to share the results using the speed of e-mail.
