1. PIPE-FLO 7.1 RELEASED

PIPE-FLO Professional 7.1 is now shipping. All North American customers that purchased PIPE-FLO Professional 7.0 after April 1, 2002, or who have the TechNet Plus Upgrade and Support Subscription should have received their upgrade. The following link is to the PIPE-FLO 7.1 product information sheet: http://www.eng-software.com/products/brochures/professional.pdf

In version 7.1 we concentrated the new features in four areas:
  • Visualization – Enhancements to the FLO-Sheet

  • Calculation – Integrating and streamlining the calculations

  • Communications – Share information with others in the design team

  • Access – Make design information available from within PIPE-FLO.
Improvements to the FLO-Sheet include; the ability to add free floating text notes and call outs, the text and object maintain their proportion during zoom operations, the addition of undo and re-do commands, the ability to export the FLO-Sheet to CAD programs.
Calculation improvements include: ability to place selected control valves into the piping system and see the valve position for each lineup, view design data for every object in the piping system with calculated results displayed.
The BIG communication feature is the ability to e-mail a Piping System View (PSV) file of your project to others in your design team. Using the PIPE-FLO Viewer program and the PSV file anyone can view the design data, see the calculated results, and print the various reports. The new PIPE-FLO Viewer program can be downloaded free of charge from the Engineered Software Website http://www.eng-software.com/psv.
The NEW access feature is FLO-Links. Each object on a FLO-Sheet can have a hypertext link to information on a Web page, display electronic documents located on a Network, display notes about the selected object, or start other programs. For example, you could have a FLO-Link on a pump that displays the pump manufacturer's Operation and Maintenance manual on their Website. You could also create a FLO-Link to a PDF file of your company's pump specification document.
All these features are highlighted in the PIPE-FLO Professional version 7.1 online Tutorial, and in the PIPE-FLO Demo tutorial.
The new PIPE-FLO 7.1 demo can be downloaded from the Engineered Software Website http://www.eng-software.com/demo.  Call your Engineered Software sales rep to order your PIPE-FLO Professional 7.1 upgrade.

2. ANNOTATING THE FLO-SHEET
A new feature of PIPE-FLO 7.1 is the ability to insert free-floating notes and call outs on the FLO-Sheet. Notes can be placed anywhere on the FLO-Sheet by:
  1. Select the Text Tool, move the mouse to the desired location, and click on the FLO-Sheet.

  2. Enter the text and choose the text size, color and orientation options.

The note can have a FLO-Link associated with it. Using this feature you can insert a note listing the referenced drawing, then create a FLO-Link for the note referencing the proper CAD drawing. When you click on the note, PIPE-FLO starts the CAD program and displays the referenced drawing.

Call out rectangles can be inserted on the FLO-Sheet as well.
  1. Choose the pointer tool and drag a rectangle over the area for the call out.

  2. Choose Draw Rectangle from the context menu.

  3. Once the rectangle is placed, you can change its size, location, and color.

A perfect use of this feature is to highlight locations in the plant. For example, you could place a call out rectangle around the objects, then use the Text tool to annotate the items.
There are plenty of examples of free-floating text, call out rectangles, and FLO-Links in the PIPE-FLO 7.1 tutorial.

3. NEW LICENSING OPTIONS
Engineered Software has three licensing options available for the PIPE-FLO Professional, Compressible, and Stock programs. The licensing options are Stand Alone, Small Office Version, and Enterprise Network Version. The main changes in licensing occur in the Small Office and Enterprise Network versions.
The Small Office Version serves the needs of a small group of people using the software at a single location. This is a perfect fit for small consulting engineering firms that want to be able access PIPE-FLO on their Local Area Network.
The Enterprise Network Version is a perfect fit for companies with multiple users located at different offices or sites. This allows anyone connected to his or her company's network to access the PIPE-FLO program. The Enterprise Network Version includes a Checkout Feature so you can install a PIPE-FLO license on a laptop and take it out to the field. A suite of administration programs makes it easy for your IT department to configure PIPE-FLO for your company's needs.

Additional information about the PIPE-FLO License options can be found at the following address: http://www.eng-software.com/products/brochures/License_Options.pdf

Call your Engineered Software sales representative to discuss your upgrade options.

4. TRAINING CLASSES
There are a variety of training classes available.
Engineered Software will be conducting a FLO-Master training class in Los Angeles CA on September 12-13, and Las Vegas NV on November 18-19. These will be the last scheduled classes in 2002. During the class we will be using PIPE-FLO 7.1, but the class content is valuable for PIPE-FLO version 6 customers as well.
Now is an excellent time to take advantage of the low air fares and learn how to get the most out of PIPE-FLO. Additional information about the FLO-Master classes is available at the following Web address: http://www.eng-software.com/products/flomaster.htm. To register for the FLO-Master seminar contact your PIPE-FLO sales representative.

We are pleased to announce that Mike Volk of Volk & Associates will be conducting his three day Pump Training Course in Seattle WA on October 1-3 2002, and in Long Beach CA on November 12-14 2002. Mr. Volk has been a consultant to the pump industry for the past 20 years and is the author of Pump Characteristics and Applications.  He has taught hundreds of pump courses worldwide, including the most successful course at the prestigious Texas A&M International Pump Users Symposium in each of the past seven years.

The 3-day course fee of $900 ($800 for registration before July 31, and $850 for registration 30 days prior to the course) includes a copy of Mr. Volk’s book, lunches, and refreshment breaks. Two CEUs will be awarded to course participants. For more information, or to register, contact Volk & Associates at 800-733-8655 or by email at mvolk@aol.com.

5. WORKING ON THE SHAPE OF A PIPELINE
Have you ever wanted to add or remove a vertex from a pipeline on the FLO-Sheet?  Let's see how this new PIPE-FLO 7.1 feature works.
When copying a pipeline, often the shape of the pipeline you are copying is not the shape that you want for the new pipeline. Using PIPE-FLO 7.0 you could move vertices and connect nodes to existing junctions, but you could not add or remove vertices from an existing pipeline. With PIPE-FLO 7.1 you can:
To add a vertex to a pipeline on the FLO-Sheet:
  1. Press and hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard.

  2. Click the mouse on the pipeline where you want to create the vertex and drag the pipeline.

A vertex is created, as indicated by the arrowhead. You can also move the pipeline endpoints and vertices using the pointer tool.
To remove a vertex from a pipeline:
  1. Click the Select button and then click on a node or pipeline vertex.

  2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the vertex to a new location on top of an existing vertex.

  3. Release the mouse button.

NOTE:  The pipelines connected to the node are stretched to accommodate the new location.
