Modeling Circuit Balancing Valves in PIPE-FLO

Customers who wish to model circuit balancing valves in PIPE-FLO® should first obtain the performance curve or CV data for the valve from the valve manufacturer. The performance characteristic curve of flow rate (gpm) vs. head loss (feet of water) for a 4" Bell & Gossett Circuit Setter Plus balancing valve is shown in Figure 1.

For each valve position, values of head loss and flow rate are selected, the head loss converted to differential pressure (dP) using Equation 1, then CV values calculated for each valve position using the flow coefficient equation, Equation 2.

ESI Provides Software Grant for Green Piping Design Training

Houston Community College

SPED

In support of the Houston Community College System (HCCS) and Society of Piping Engineers and Designers' (SPED) new Green Piping Design training program, ESI awarded a grant worth $25,000 for use of their flagship PIPE FLO software program.

The training is a new Green Process Piper Program at HCCS, in cooperation with the SPED, targeting unemployed and displaced piping designers. Although usually analyzed by engineers, the availability of low cost tools means technicians can now perform much of the same work.

"This is a new, more advanced level of skill we are giving these pipers," said William G. Beazley, SPED Executive Director. "Signs of increasing demand for efficiency in process and power plants are everywhere. The best prepared will be the first hired, when spending surges."

Your Questions Answered

Ask an Engineer

Q.  What is a Circuit Balancing Valve?

A. Circuit balancing valves are a type of manually operated throttle valve used to add precise hydraulic resistance to a pipeline to dissipate energy in the form of head loss (and thereby the pressure drop) in order to set the flow rate to the design condition. A “balancing valve” typically has a scale to indicate the valve’s position and a well-defined flow performance curve so the precise amount of resistance can be added.

These are typically used in piping system such as an HVAC or cooling water system, but the concept can be applied to any fluid piping system. Knowing the flow rate requirement and the amount of head loss the valve must dissipate, the valve position can be determined and the valve set to that position. Some may be equipped with an inlet and outlet port to connect a differential pressure meter so the valve can be used as a flow meter.

ESI Around the Globe

Headed to AHR EXPO in Orlando

esiglobe

We are attending the AHR EXPO, in Orlando, Florida. The show runs from January 26-28 and our booth number is 2072. If you will be attending the show and would like to set up a meeting with one of our representatives, please email marketing@eng-software.com .

ESI has representatives going to California for an onsite training this month. We will also be presenting a Total Pump Training in our local area in early February. Onsite training an location requests can be made at anytime for most any location. For details about onsite or hosted classes please contact us at training@eng-software.com.
