Using a Piping System Model for Process Safety Management
A Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (PSM) program is mandated by OSHA (standard, 29 CFR1910.119) to prevent the unwanted release of hazardous chemicals exposing employees and others to serious hazards. The PSM program requires a systematic approach for evaluating the process including, the process design, process technology, operational and maintenance, emergency preparedness plans, along with a training program. It requires an evaluation of the total system to minimize or eliminate chemical releases occurring as a result of failures in the process, procedures, and equipment.
The various piping system models generated using PIPE-FLO can be utilized to evaluate seven areas involved in the Process Safety Management Plan. Specifically, Process Safety Information, Process Hazard Analysis, Operating Procedures & Practices, Employee Training, Pre-Startup Safety, Managing Change, and Investigation of Incidents.
Read on to see how various PIPE-FLO features can help you develop a PSM plan. |

We have two training classes left in this year. An onsite for the new Pump System Optimization seminar in Pittsburgh, PA and our final scheduled Piping System training course.
Our Training will be on a winter break but will recommence in February. We have posted
tentative spring training dates for the FLO-Master training and Piping System Training courses.
If you have suggestions for training locations, NOW is the time for sending them to training@eng-software.com . Onsite opportunities are always available for your convenience.
All of our training qualifies for Professional Development Hours or Continuing Educational Credits, and we will customize or combine classes for you company.
For more information on hosting an onsite training or customizing your own classes, call or email today at 1-800-786-8545 or training@fluidfundamentals.com. |

Metric Piping System Fundamentals Book Now Available |
|
Engineered Software, announced the release of the metric edition of the book, Piping System Fundamentals: The Complete Guide to Gaining a Clear Picture of Your Piping System. The book was written by author and trainer Ray T. Hardee, P.E., and is a guide book for understanding basic design principles in piping systems.
Formally only available in U.S. units, the comprehensive guide is now available in a metric edition. The Piping System Fundamentals Metric Edition covers all the same topics covered in the original U.S. Edition but has all conversions done for the reader. The book is 160 pages, has more than 140 images and a newly expanded index. A preview of the U.S. version is available online.
"We are excited to have a metric version of this book because of the growing interest for this book and the accompanying training in international locations," said Ray Hardee, P.E. and Chief Engineer at Engineered Software, Inc.
"The book was intentionally written in a conversational style in order to encourage understanding and comprehension. I didn’t want this to be too technical of a document that no one could actually read, but I also knew the information might be critical for people designing and maintaining piping systems and so, needed to be precise," Hardee said.
All case studies have been converted to metric as well. The text includes a free software CD to perform calculations and design systems found in the book.
Pricing and Availability
Piping System Fundamentals: The Complete Guide to Gaining a Clear Picture of Your Piping System METRIC EDITION, is priced at $95 USD. Includes free software CD for designing and calculating piping systems. The book is also included free with registration to a Piping System Fundamentals Training Course, schedule available online. For book, training registration and further information, visit www.fluidfundamentals.com call (360) 412-0702 or email info@eng-software.com.

Ask an Engineer
Q. I have a complex system that changes over a period of time. My tank liquid levels are expected to fluctuate due to tank discharge, my control valves will be changing position as new loads are introduced, and I will have external events which effect the demands on my system. Is it possible to do this type of extended period time simulations using PIPE-FLO?
|

|
A. PIPE-FLO systems can be easily analyzed over a period of time within a companion program called Overtime. The Overtime program gives you complete control over the duration and frequency of a time simulation. In addition, it allows for a dynamic analysis of even the most complex PIPE-FLO systems.
With Overtime, you can program all of the conditions and effects which dictate the operation of your piping system. In addition, you can graph the results and get a very clear picture of how your system currently operates, and even get a picture of how your system would operate if you were to change system conditions.
To read the full article about how to use PIPE-FLO to
develop and implement a PSM program, visit our Knowledge Base article titled, "Time Simulation with Overtime."
If you have a general question about piping systems, pumps, or any theories related, send your question to solutions@eng-software.com with "Ask an Engineer" in the subject line. |

Headed to Power Gen International in Las Vegas |
|
ESI hosted a free workshop during the 2009 Chem Show in New York. The workshop entitled, Piping System Optimization: The Winning Trifecta. The focus of the workshop is piping system optimization; How to improve your capitol costs, maintenance costs, and operating costs. Learn how to get your winning trifecta for your plant, and fluid piping system.
ESI will be closed November 26 & 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday in the U.S. in order to spend time with our families. We will be open again on the following Monday, November 30th.
This December we will be attending the POWER-GEN International trade show in Las Vegas. The show runs from December 8-10 and our booth number is C5-281. If you will be attending the show and would like to set up a meeting with one of our representatives, please email marketing@eng-software.com . |
