PIPE-FLO Feature of the Month
Part 2: Importing design data into your Excel® spreadsheets

In January, we covered how to pull design and calculated data from PIPE-FLO and into an Excel spreadsheet using the new 2007 PIPE-FLO feature called X-Link. Today’s issue will cover how to import Excel data into your PIPE-FLO system as well as how to set up some basic controls in Excel.

Import data into PIPE-FLO using X-Link:
This feature is valuable anytime you wish to manipulate your PIPE-FLO system from Excel. Specifically, importing process control data from any program which reports in Excel format (Aspen Tech IP.21 or OSISoft Pi to name a few) can be beneficial to assess the running conditions of your plant. For example:

  • If you have tank levels from your process control data interface that you want to feed back into PIPE-FLO and see how your system should be running with this tank condition.

  • If you want to decrease the pipe diameter of all pipes in you system with a fluid velocity less than 2 ft/s to prevent sediment in the pipeline.

  • If your customer has decided on a different naming scheme for their pipelines and you have just completed designing their system of 14,000 pipelines in PIPE-FLO and dread going back to rename them pipe by pipe.

Pull the information into Excel, manipulate the names, then import them back into PIPE-FLO and you can accomplish these tasks in minutes.

Set up controls within Excel using your PIPE-FLO data:
The ability to set up controls (list boxes and/or drop down boxes) can be valuable to allow additional customization of your systems design data or results. For example:

  • You want to create a customized data sheet for reporting the system design information and results to your manager or external customers.

  • You have an existing Excel spreadsheet tool and wish to include PIPE-FLO data using list boxes or drop down boxes.

Program Bulletin
PIPE-FLO and Windows Vista Compatibility

The new release of PIPE-FLO and Flow of Fluids (2007) will run on Windows Vista however, we have identified certain compatibility issues:

  1. The Print to PDF function requires the download of an updated driver for Windows Vista. You can download the PDF driver from this article.

  2. The Verification Key drivers that were installed with the versions 2005 or earlier of PIPE-FLO and Flow of Fluids are not Vista compatible; users need to install the new driver which can be found in this article Until the driver is updated Vista will not recognize the hardware key and the program will not run.

  3. Because the users My Documents path has been renamed in Windows Vista to Documents, there are potential issues regarding the data files. If your copy of Vista is not upgraded to the latest patches, you may encounter problems installing older versions of PIPE-FLO or Flow of Fluids.

  4. Users who had earlier versions (2005 or earlier) installed prior to updating to Vista may be unable to locate the previously installed data tables and piping projects. This can be corrected by browsing to the Documents path on the Tools/Preferences screen of PIPE-FLO/Flow of Fluids.

ESI Around the Globe

After such a successful event at the Pump Symposium in Houston, we would like to thank all that stopped in to our booth. In the last two months, we have been focusing our efforts abroad, now we are bringing our attentions back home.

Since we have been growing in size, ESI needed to increase the size of our headquarters. We expanded into the office next door. It may be a little noisy around here but we are very excited for the added space. We will hopefully be finished with the moving process by the beginning of April!
