Pump Systems Matter’s Newest Sponsor

Engineered Software, Inc. announces its proud sponsorship of the educational organization, Pump Systems Matter (PSM). PSM initiative was launched by the Hydraulic Institute in 2004 as an industry-led market transformation from one of equipment first costs to one based on system life cycle costs. PSM is focused primarily on pump systems education and outreach, addressing energy savings opportunities, and total cost of pump ownership.

“Pump Systems Matter allows us to be further involved in helping to reduce energy consumption and cost among end-users,” said Ray Hardee, Chief Engineer for Engineered Software. “PIPE-FLO software falls right in line with what they are doing, and we thought there was no better platform than energy reduction and system efficiency.”

Department of Energy studies have shown that better system design and more effective application of pumps can save 20% or more in energy costs and represent a large, frequently overlooked savings opportunity. With recent increases in energy costs, Engineered Software aims to offer users valuable, bottom-line oriented energy savings opportunities through the full understanding of fluid piping systems.

Engineered Software has many software packages that aid in the designing and simulation of fluid piping systems, and all have the common application of lowering energy consumption, improving the bottom-line of system operation, while providing a clear picture of the total piping system.

“By getting people to understand and actually see how their piping system is operating, users can make more accurate changes to improve their situation using PIPE-FLO Software,” Hardee added.

PIPE-FLO Feature of the Month
PIPE-FLO Overtime

It is often necessary to see how a piping system operates over time. For example, as a tank is pumped down, the static head increases resulting in a smaller flow rate through the pump. This reduction in flow rate causes the tank to take longer to pump down. This type of calculation is called an extended period simulation. PIPE-FLO Overtime takes your piping system model made in PIPE-FLO Professional and turns the static model into a dynamic simulation. It is like the difference between a snap shot, and a movie.

PIPE-FLO is a steady state hydraulic analysis program, and therefore is not designed to perform extended period simulation. With Overtime, however, you can simulate any PIPE-FLO system’s operation over an extended period of time. The Overtime program gives the user complete control over the duration and frequency of a time simulation. In addition, it allows for a dynamic analysis of even the most complex PIPE-FLO systems. With Overtime, you can program all of the conditions and effects, which dictate the operation of your piping system. In addition to that, you can graph the results and get a very clear picture of how your system currently operates, and even get a picture of how your system would operate if you were to change the conditions.

Training Opportunity
Pump Training from an Industry Expert

Pumps are an integral part of your industry. Yet engineers, operators, and maintenance technicians are seldom fully trained to handle the pump problems they encounter daily. A good understanding of proper pump application, selection, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance are vital to the success of your company. Now you can learn everything you need to know about pumps at a three-day training course offered by noted Consultant and Author, Michael Volk.

Volk has been a consultant on pumps for the past 25 years, and has worked in engineering and operations with one of the world’s leading pump manufacturers. He authored Pump Characteristics and Applications, a highly acclaimed pump applications handbook. Volk has taught hundreds of pump courses worldwide, including the most successful course ever held at the prestigious International Pump Users Symposium for the last ten years.

Classes are for engineers, maintenance technicians, pump sales and applications personnel, and will be held:

  • October 17 – 19, 2007 in San Diego, CA.

For more information or to register, contact Volk & Associates at 800-733-8655 or by email at info@volkassociates.com.
