Use PIPE-FLO to Model Fire Sprinkler Systems According to NFPA 13 Standards

PIPE-FLO has been used for years to design fire sprinkler systems in offshore platforms and power plants. In order to better serve customers, the latest version of PIPE-FLO Professional has been upgraded to perform hydraulic calculations following the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 13 standards.
By adding the Hazen-Williams method of hydraulic calculation to PIPE-FLO, the program meets the needs of those who are designing fire sprinkler systems according the NFPA 13 standards. The need for fire sprinkler design and simulation software has grown as safety standards have increased and older facilities designed prior to these standards being established have begun to undergo remodeling.
PIPE-FLO is the perfect tool to use when designing a fire sprinkler system. By modeling the system in PIPE-FLO users can understand exactly how the system will work under a variety of circumstances as well as select pumps from manufacturers supplied catalogs. This will ensure that users have a well designed system that has been analyzed under a number of operating conditions.
We understand the importance of correctly sizing pumps and components in fire sprinkler systems as the job of a fire sprinkler engineer is critical because lives are at stake. PIPE-FLO provides a program that helps make fire sprinkler design easier by quickly and accurately designing, simulating and troubleshooting systems.

PIPE-FLO Feature of the Month
Formats for Centrifugal Pump Curves

When displaying pump curves in PIPE-FLO, the amount of information displayed on the curve varies based on the way the pump performance data was entered. In this article we will discuss the three ways in which pump performance data can be entered in PIPE-FLO, the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and describe the information available on the pump curve. We have created an example PIPE-FLO 2004 sample system that demonstrates the pump curves for each method.
Pump performance data can be entered into a PIPE-FLO model by one of the following methods:
  1. Manual data entry

  2. User curve

  3. Manufacturers electronic pump catalog

Each method is described in the PIPE-FLO help file when you conduct a search on “entering pump data”. The information that is displayed and available for each method is summarized in the article.

Industry Insider
Real World Examples of PIPE-FLO Saving Time and Money

Using PIPE-FLO to Analyze Large Chilled Water Systems
Shah Smith & Associates’ business is about striking a balance, increasing reliability, reducing life-cycle costs, maximizing energy efficiency, minimizing environmental impact, complex integration of systems, simplified maintenance protocols, and anticipating future needs.
Clients appreciate their focus on performance standards and cost objectives. Owners and architects value their willingness to look beyond the expected in designing systems to meet aesthetic and sustainability requirements. Their attention to detail makes for a smoother construction process.
Jeffery N. Bolander, D.Eng, P.E. and Vice President at Shah Smith & Associates has been using the PIPE-FLO product line to conduct hydraulic analysis for nearly 10 years. During this time he has used PIPE-FLO on a variety of projects, often for large chilled water systems on expanding college campuses.
"You really couldn’t do this type of network analysis by hand in any reasonable amount of time. You would have to make some pretty big assumptions. You can’t do a comprehensive evaluation without PIPE-FLO. We simply wouldn’t do it any other way,” said Jeffery N. Bolander, D.Eng, P.E. and Vice President at Shah Smith & Associates.
