This is the March 2004 issue of the Engineered Software Fluid Flow Newsletter.

This month’s edition focuses on customizing the operation of PIPE-FLO to meet your company’s needs. We have articles on creating pipe specifications, saving the specification into a design file, customizing the engineering tables, and sharing your design files and data tables with everyone in your company.

If you have any questions of comments about this or previous newsletters, please send an e-mail to enews@eng-software.com. We enjoy hearing from you all.

1. PIPE SPECIFICATIONS

Each pipeline in a PIPE-FLO project references a specification. Using specifications streamlines the data entry, and maintains design control within your PIPE-FLO project.

When selecting a specification in PIPE-FLO, the program sets the pipe material, pipe schedule, along with the valve and fitting table used for that pipeline. The specification can also contain pipe sizing rules, and design guides.

By saving your pipe specification in design a file, the information is available for use on similar piping projects in the future.

To review the specifications and design file features, start the PIPE-FLO Demo and select the File / New menu item.

On the System Setting and Property dialog, click on the File folder icon located in the Design Files group box. From the Select Design File dialog, choose the “DEMO Design File” from the list. The File Note provides indication of the content and use of the selected design file.

After loading the design file, click on the Specifications tab, here you’ll see the list of available pipe specifications loaded from the design file for use on this project. Highlighting a specification on the list displays the following information:

  • The selected pipe material, schedule, and pipe roughness
  • The selected valve & fitting table used by the specification
  • The sizing criteria used in calculating the optimum pipe diameter
  • The design limits of maximum and minimum values for fluid velocity
  • The note at the bottom of the dialog explains when this specification is used

You can add or edit the specifications by clicking on the Add or Edit Specifications button.

To find out more about streamlining the sizing of pipelines while maintaining design control, plan to attend one of our PIPE-FLO Web seminars. Call your Engineered Software account representative to schedule a time and date, or signup on our Website http://www.eng-software.com/webdemo.

2. SAVING DESIGN FILES

Starting a project with a design file eliminates the need for you to re-create pipe specifications for each project. Using PIPE-FLO, you can save your pipe specifications (along with all the other information on the System Settings and Property dialog) in a design file.

After creating or modifying a pipe specification in your PIPE-FLO project, those changes occur in that project only. To make those changes available in the design file the next time you start a project, you will need to save the design file.

Saving a design file is easy; simply select the File / Save Design File menu item. Design files are saved in their own directory separate from the project files; in addition, design files have their own file extension of “.pdes”.

After saving the design file, it’s available complete with your changes and additions for use in any future project on any similar project.

3.  ENGINEERING DATA TABLES

PIPE-FLO uses pipe and valve data tables referenced in the pipe specification when sizing pipelines. You can further customize the operation of PIPE-FLO by modifying these engineering data tables.

Suppose your company does not use 5-inch steel pipe of any schedule in your projects. The steel pipe size table shipped with PIPE-FLO is based on the ANSI B36.10 and B36.19 standards, which includes 5-inch diameter pipe. If you leave the 5-inch diameter pipe in your table, you run the risk of someone not getting the word and using this pipe diameter, you now have a problem.

You can eliminate this problem by removing all 5-inch pipe sizes from PIPE-FLO’s steel pipe size table. In other words, you are customizing your steel pipe size table to reflect the way your company does business.

The Table Manager program is supplied with every copy of PIPE-FLO; with it, you can create new or edit existing engineering tables. It’s a quick and easy way for you to customize PIPE-FLO. For more details on customizing engineering data tables, call your Account Representative toll free at 800-786-8545.

4.  SHARING DESIGN FILES

In this article, you’ll see how to share design files and engineering data tables with all PIPE-FLO users on your network. Sharing these files eliminates the need to update everyone’s design files and engineering tables, while allowing you to maintain design control within your company.

The following suggestions apply to both the network and stand-alone versions of our software. The only requirement is your computers must be connected to a network.

By default, PIPE-FLO stores all engineering data tables in the Tables directory, and all design files in the Designs directory of the computer where the software is installed. The directories are saved in My Engineering Files under the My Documents directory.

You can change the location where PIPE-FLO looks for these files by selecting the Tools / Preferences menu item. The paths to the various file locations are displayed in the middle of the dialog box. You can browse your network by clicking on the file folder button to the right of the text edit box. Simply choose the directory where you want PIPE-FLO to look for the Designs and Tables, and then click OK.

If you have a network license for PIPE-FLO, your network administrator can customize the installation program to direct your copy of PIPE-FLO to a directories located on a central server available for by all PIPE-FLO users.

To find out more about sharing your design files and engineering data tables on a network call your account representative toll free at 800-786-8545.

5.  ODDS & ENDS – DOWNLOAD MANUFACTURERS PUMP CATALOGS FROM THE WEB

In the past, you had to contact each pump manufacturer directly to get a copy of their electronic pump catalogs.

We are pleased to announce that you can now download many of the pump catalogs from the new Pump Manufacturers List on the Engineered Software Website. http://www.eng-software.com/pml/default.asp.

You have the option of displaying all the available manufacturers, or you can limit the manufacturers providing pumps for a specific industry or market.

All the catalogs available for download appear on the top of the Pump Manufacturers List. Simply click on the Download Now button and follow the instructions on the screen. It’s quick and easy.

It is important to remember, the pump manufacturers are still supplying you with their approved Electronic Pump Catalogs. The only difference is we have worked closely with the manufactures to streamline and simplify the catalog installation process.

Some of the manufacturers still required you to contact them directly to get a copy of their catalog. Links to those manufacturers are also on the Pump Manufacturers List.

As always, if you would like to see a new manufacturers catalog added, please contact your account rep toll free at 800-786-8545, or send us an e-mail to info@pump-flo.com specifying the manufacturers you would like to see added.
